Overview
ExpressVPN has long been the premium name in consumer VPNs, and it still delivers the most polished experience. It covers 105 countries with 3,000+ servers, is based in the British Virgin Islands, and has been owned by Kape Technologies since 2021.
Its infrastructure is the main draw. Every server runs on TrustedServer, a RAM-only setup that wipes data on each reboot, so nothing is stored to disk. Lightway, ExpressVPN's in-house protocol, is built for fast reconnection when switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and the apps — including a router app — are the most refined we have tested. Its privacy claims have been independently audited several times.
The premium shows in the price. Plans start at $4.99/mo, there is no free tier, and eight simultaneous connections is fewer than several cheaper rivals allow.
Best for: travellers and anyone who values app quality and the widest choice of server countries.
