Mobile Proxy
An IP address routed through physical 4G, 5G, or LTE cellular connections from mobile network operators, leveraging Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) to provide the highest anti-ban trust score of any proxy type.
Mobile proxies route internet traffic through cellular network adapters (4G, 5G, or LTE) connected to mobile telecom carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone, or EE. They represent the highest echelon of proxy trust and anti-bot evasion.
The unique superpower of mobile proxies stems from the architectural foundation of modern cellular networks: Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT).
The Secret Weapon: Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) (link to this section)
When mobile network operators build cellular data networks, they face a severe shortage of public IPv4 addresses. A single cellular provider may have 50 million smartphone subscribers but only 2 million public IPv4 addresses.
To overcome this, carriers place thousands of active mobile devices behind massive network address translation gateways called Carrier-Grade NAT (RFC 6598):
- At any given second, hundreds or thousands of real smartphone users in a city share the exact same public mobile IP address simultaneously.
- While one person on that IP is watching YouTube, another is browsing Instagram, and someone else is buying shoes on Nike.
- Because thousands of legitimate customers share each public IP, anti-bot firewalls (such as Cloudflare, Akamai, and Instagram) cannot ban mobile IPs. Doing so would cause catastrophic collateral damage, locking out thousands of real, paying human users.
As a direct result, security algorithms grant drastically higher rate limits and much more forgiving trust scores to mobile ASNs.
How Mobile Proxy Farms Are Built (link to this section)
Mobile proxy infrastructure is constructed using two primary hardware approaches:
- Physical 4G/5G USB Dongle Farms: Providers maintain server racks filled with hundreds of commercial USB cellular modems (such as Huawei or ZTE dongles), each equipped with a physical SIM card from a local carrier. Each modem represents an isolated cellular connection.
- Rooted Android Smartphone Clusters: Banks of physical Android smartphones connected via USB debugging to server control software that manages proxy daemons directly on each phone.
Instant IP Rotation via Airplane Mode Cycling (link to this section)
One of the greatest features of mobile proxies is the ability to obtain a completely new, clean IP address on demand without losing connection to the hardware:
- When a mobile device toggles Airplane Mode on and off, it disconnects from the cellular tower and reconnects.
- The carrier's Base Station Controller and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN/PGW) assign the device a completely new dynamic IP address from the carrier's cellular pool.
- This rotation takes only 5 to 15 seconds, providing an infinite supply of fresh, high-reputation residential mobile IPs.
Comparison: Mobile vs Residential vs Datacenter (link to this section)
| Metric | Mobile 4G/5G Proxy | Residential Proxy | Datacenter Proxy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trust / Reputation | Maximum (10/10) | High (8/10) | Low to Medium (3/10) |
| Ban Resistance | Practically immune to IP bans | Highly resistant | Easily banned |
| Rotation Method | Airplane mode toggle (5–15s) | Backconnect pool swap | Fixed or subnet rotation |
| Speed / Latency | 20 – 60 Mbps, 100–300ms | 30 – 100 Mbps, 150–500ms | 1 – 10 Gbps, < 20ms |
| Pricing | $50 – $120 / dedicated modem / mo | $2 – $8 / GB | $0.80 – $2.00 / IP / mo |
| Primary Use Cases | Social media, aggressive targets | E-commerce, SERP scraping | Bulk permissive scraping |
In practice
- Warming up and running 15 high-value Instagram and TikTok growth marketing accounts on a single dedicated 4G dongle by rotating the IP every 30 minutes via airplane mode.
- Scraping aggressively protected platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook Marketplace, or Google Maps that instantly challenge residential and datacenter proxies.
- Conducting mobile ad verification to inspect in-app banner delivery, carrier billing gateways, and SMS attribution flows across specific cellular carriers.
- Bypassing SMS and account registration security thresholds on major consumer platforms.

Frequently asked
Mobile proxies require physical hardware (individual 4G/5G modems or smartphones), dedicated cellular data plans with mobile carriers, and hardware maintenance facilities, making infrastructure costs substantially higher than software-hosted datacenter servers.
When a script or API triggers an airplane mode toggle on the proxy modem, the device temporarily disconnects from the cell tower. Upon reconnecting seconds later, the mobile carrier automatically assigns a brand-new dynamic IP address from its pool.
A dedicated mobile proxy gives you exclusive control over a single physical 4G/5G modem and its SIM card, allowing you to trigger IP rotation whenever you choose. A shared mobile pool shares modems among multiple users, where rotation happens on a shared schedule.
They can identify that the connection originates from a cellular carrier (like Verizon Wireless or Vodafone) via ASN lookups. However, because thousands of real smartphone users share that exact same IP via CGNAT, anti-bot systems cannot discern automated traffic from legitimate human mobile users.
