HTTP / HTTPS Proxy
An application-layer proxy designed specifically for web traffic, capable of inspecting headers, caching static assets, and tunneling encrypted TLS traffic using the HTTP CONNECT method.
An HTTP proxy is a Layer 7 (Application Layer) intermediary server designed specifically to process Hypertext Transfer Protocol traffic. It sits between a client browser or web scraper and the web servers being visited.
Because HTTP proxies understand web protocols, they can inspect request headers, cache static web assets, rewrite URLs, and filter content. For encrypted web traffic (HTTPS), modern HTTP proxies utilize the standardized HTTP CONNECT tunneling method to establish secure, end-to-end encrypted pipelines.
How HTTP Proxies Handle Plain HTTP vs HTTPS (link to this section)
HTTP proxies process unencrypted HTTP and encrypted HTTPS traffic through completely different mechanisms:
1. Plain HTTP Forwarding (link to this section)
When requesting an unencrypted page (http://example.com/data), the client sends the entire request line to the proxy:
GET http://example.com/data HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0...The proxy reads the request, strips local headers if configured, makes an outbound connection to example.com, fetches the content, and returns it to the client. The proxy has full visibility into the plaintext URL, headers, and body.
2. HTTPS Tunneling via the HTTP CONNECT Method (link to this section)
For encrypted websites (https://securebank.com), the client cannot send plaintext URLs to the proxy without compromising security. Instead, it utilizes the HTTP CONNECT method (defined in RFC 7231):
- The client sends a handshake request to the proxy:
CONNECT securebank.com:443 HTTP/1.1
Host: securebank.com:443- The proxy server opens a raw TCP connection to
securebank.comon port 443. - The proxy responds to the client with:
HTTP/1.1 200 Connection Established- From this point forward, the proxy functions as an opaque bidirectional byte pipe. The client and
securebank.comperform their standard TLS handshake directly through the tunnel. The proxy cannot read passwords, cookies, or encrypted page contents.
Levels of Proxy Anonymity: Transparent, Anonymous, and Elite (link to this section)
HTTP proxies are classified into three distinct anonymity tiers based on how they handle request headers:
| Tier | X-Forwarded-For Header | Via Header | Anonymity Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transparent Proxy | Contains your real client IP | Injected | Zero. Target website sees your real IP and knows a proxy is used. |
| Anonymous Proxy (Distorting) | Contains fake IP or proxy IP | Injected | Medium. Hides your real IP, but reveals that you are using a proxy. |
| Elite Proxy (High Anonymity) | Not sent (stripped) | Not sent | Maximum. Target website sees only the proxy IP and cannot tell a proxy is being used. |
When scraping or managing accounts, always verify that your provider provides Elite (Level 1) proxies.
Configuration in Modern Tooling (link to this section)
Connecting to an authenticated HTTP/HTTPS proxy in code:
import requests
proxies = {
"http": "http://username:password@proxy.example.com:8080",
"https": "http://username:password@proxy.example.com:8080"
}
response = requests.get("https://api.ipify.org?format=json", proxies=proxies)
print(response.json())In practice
- Routing an automated Python web scraper through an elite HTTPS proxy to scrape retail product catalog pages without leaking internal network IPs.
- Configuring a corporate forward proxy (such as Squid) in an office to cache frequently downloaded software updates and block malicious phishing domains.
- Using an intercepting debugging proxy like mitmproxy or Charles Proxy to inspect API requests and responses during mobile application development.
- Distributing web automation tasks across an array of authenticated HTTP proxy endpoints.
Common use cases
Frequently asked
No. When connecting to an HTTPS site, the proxy uses the HTTP CONNECT method to create a blind TCP tunnel. End-to-end TLS encryption is established directly between your browser and the destination server, so the proxy only sees encrypted ciphertext.
An Elite proxy completely strips identifying headers (such as `X-Forwarded-For` and `Via`). The destination web server only sees the proxy's IP address and has no indication that the request passed through an intermediary proxy.
HTTP proxies operate at Layer 7 and understand web protocols, making them ideal for web scraping and caching. SOCKS5 proxies operate at Layer 5 and are completely protocol-agnostic, capable of routing non-web traffic like UDP, torrents, and custom sockets.
Transparent and caching proxies used in corporate networks or CDNs intentionally send `X-Forwarded-For` to help backend servers know the original client's IP address for geolocation or rate limiting. Commercial scraping proxies always strip this header.
